Money Worries?

Worries about finances are not uncommon among students but can have a big impact on your overall university experience. Where possible it is important to plan ahead and be wary of what might seem like a quick fix solution, such as gambling or a payday loan with high interest. When it comes to overdrafts it can be easy to forget that this money is borrowed and eventually must be paid back. We advise saving your overdraft for if you are faced with an unexpected cost such as a house deposit, which can equate to 5 weeks rent. Understandably, you might be concerned about a friend who you know is in financial difficulty and want to help them. We would encourage you to be mindful of offering to lend another student money as they may be borrowing from others and struggle to repay you. Instead, encourage your friend to seek support from our Student Union Advisor and Wellbeing Coordinator, or a Student Life Adviser in Student Services.

If you think you’ve been the victim of a scam you should contact your bank and report the scam to Action Fraud. If you are struggling with gambling, GAMSTOP can help you to put controls in place to restrict your online gambling activity. GamCare are also available to offer support.  If money is a real worry, contact studentsandmoney@winchester.ac.uk or student.advice@winchester.ac.uk. If you are facing unexpected financial hardship they will discuss an application to the Student Support Fund with you.
