This week’s spotlight is on Energy Bills. Whilst it’s easy to ignore how much energy you use, it’s important to know what costs what and why.
Like many of us until recently, you may not have fully understood energy bills. If you are privately renting and responsible for paying your utility bills (i.e. you bills are not included in your rent), you may find the BBC’s Your Energy Bill Explained video useful. EDF Energy has a really useful guide to student energy bills, including definitions
So where can you cut down energy and save money?
The first step to cutting down on your energy usage is to understand what items have what energy usage. Save the Student has loads of useful pages on energy saving. They explain the Most Common Energy Wasting Habits, and what they cost.
Now you have a better idea of what energy usage costs, how can you cut back? Octopus (an energy provider) has tips, and a quiz to help understand your usage and how to cut back. With the current cost of living crisis, there are loads of materials online with tips to cut down on usage. Save the Student have 14 student specific tips for cutting down on energy. The Money Saving Expert, and Energy Trust also offer guidance on how to cut down energy bills. Go Compare (an insurance provider) has a useful energy caculator that allows you to see how much it costs to run household items.
