Here at Winchester Student Union, we understand the stress of the current cost of living crisis. We’ve put together fortnightly spotlights with tips and tricks to help save your pennies.

While the recent focus for many of us has been on saving money on our energy bills, we can also look to save on our water usage.

Cutting down on our hot water use, will not only cut down general water use but also energy bills. It’s uses energy or gas to heat water. So next time you’re having a nice long shower, think about the money you could be saving if you didn’t spend an extra 5 minutes in there.

How can we all save water?

  • Taking shorter showers and less baths. Swapping the shower head to an aerated head.
  • Check your toilet isn’t leaking or dripping. If it is, ask your landlord or letting agent to fix it.
  • Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth.
  • If you’re lucky enough to have a dishwasher, the Eco setting can be more efficient then washing by hand.
  • When doing dishes, make sure either the dishwasher is full, or there are enough dirty plates to justify a full bowl of hot water.
  • Share the washing machine with your friends or housemates to make sure it’s a full load.
  • Keep the lids on your saucepans when cooking to reduce the amount of water lost though steam, and it’ll help your food cook quicker reducing energy.
  • Only use the kettle to boil the amount of water you need. Try not to fill it all the way up for one cuppa.

The Energy Saving Trust and Waterwise have plenty of tips and tricks for saving water.
