Here at Winchester Student Union, we understand the stress of the current cost of living crisis. We’ve put together fortnightly spotlights with tips and tricks to help save your pennies.
We’re not here to say “you shouldn’t spend money on this” or “don’t waste you money on that”. Realistically, you’ll all be spending money on things such as subscriptions, and memberships that make you happy. It’s important to have something you enjoy, making sure you can wind down from time to time. But we might be able to help you save some money as a bonus.
Most of us have heard of video streaming services like Netflix, Disney Plus and Prime Video. For those who haven’t, these services allow you to watch films and TV programmes for a subscription fee, which can be cancelled at any time.
Netflix has 4 packages, each with different price ranges. If you’re thinking of getting a Netflix subscription, it may be worth thinking about who you might want to share it with. For example, the Standard and Premium packages include multiple screens, and sharing this with a friend could lower the cost to you.
Disney Plus on the other hand, has 1 package with 2 price options. You can either pay for the whole year at once, and get 2 months free, or you can pay monthly. Disney’s package comes with 4 screens, and downloadable content as standard.
Psst! Don’t forget to keep an eye out on UNiDAYS or StudentBeans for additional discounts.
Another streaming service you may be considering is Prime Video. The only one of the three that has their own student discount scheme through Amazon Prime. With Prime Student, you can receive 6-months for free, and then a half price subscription following that. This also comes with other bonuses like free next day delivery on some of your Amazon purchases and additional Prime discounts. The only downside to Prime Video, is that not all of their film or TV content is included with the subscription.
