As the nomination deadline for the Student Union Elections draw near Harry Mayall gives an insight into his time as a Student Officer (Welfare Officer) and what inspired him to run in the elections last year.

What Inspired/Encouraged you to run to be a Student Officer?

I have always been interested in mental health and wellbeing in general due to being brought up in a medical environment. I felt the Student Union role was a great opportunity to have an official title for the students to be aware of. Also, being a politics student, the idea of democracy excitied me, it felt like a chance to learn more about student democracy and the internal workings of the SU.

What has been your bigggest achievement/success as an Officer this year?

Creating new support systems for the studens would be my proudest achievement, specifically the drug and alcohol awareness scheme and increasing awareness of mental health. I feel I am creating more opportunities for people to get help or to simply just learn. However, the experience of being an Officer as a whole is an achievement for me as what I have learnt is what has led me to create such opportunities for others.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced as an Officer this year?

The biggest challenge as a student being a Student Officcer is the business of my life since taking up such a role. I also take an extra module and have work for 3 days down in London. However, all of my time outside of studying is dedicated to the role of Student Officer and I see it not just as a job-type role but also a hobby.

What would be your top three tips for running in a Student Union election?

1) Be genuinely interested in the role you want to represent.

2) Be confident. You may feel others aren't doing the same as you, but that's what makes you stand out.

3) Stand for something you truely believe in,
