Do
Read labels on cleaning products and follow instructions.
Store cleaning products in a cool, dark place.
Wash cloths regularly.
Use different cloths for different areas. E.g., yellow for bathroom, red for toilet, green for kitchen...
Sweep/hoover hard floors regularly and then mop with hot water.
Don’t
Mix chemicals – they could be toxic.
Use bleach and bleach-based products if you or others suffer from health problems such as asthma.
Leave cloths/sponges in water – make sure you leave them to dry.
Cover radiators with wet washing or items.
Use too much water when washing the floor.
Hoover wet areas – this could break the hoover!
Use the same cloth for different purposes – e.g., don’t use the toilet cloth for the kitchen.
Always sort before washing. Common loads might include one based on fabric type (gym clothes, towels, etc...) colour (whites, darks, etc...), or dirt level (keep stained clothes away from lightly worn clothes).
Wash your sheets regularly. Use a hot cycle for white or stained sheets, and a warm or cold setting for prints/dark colours. Let the sheets have the washer to themselves to prevent snagging or twisting. Dry on a medium to low heat.
Prep clothes before washing. Remove pins or buckles, zip zippers and secure velcro to prevent snags. But don’t button buttons – this can stress the buttons and buttonholes.
Choose the right washing settings. A regular cycle is best for sturdy and dirty clothes, while the delicate cycle is good for lacy and loosley woven fabrics. Hot water should be used for white loads, warm for the average load, and cold water for bright colours.
