BUCS Sport

British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) is the national governing body for higher education sport in the UK. They facilitate and deliver cross-university competition, including national events, and campaigns with an aim to get students active more often, through traditional competitive sport and providing physical activity opportunities.

At Winchester we have 24 teams entered into BUCS leagues across 10 sports. These sports are Badminton, Basketball, Dodgeball, Football, Futsal, Hockey, Netball, Rugby Union, Tennis and Volleyball.

Outside of leagues, BUCs also hosts events for a variety of in other sports. Last year our Athletics, Swim, Climbing and Tennis teams competed in BUCS national competitions. Current upcoming BUCS events can be found here.

All of our teams are open students that are beginners, immediate or experienced. For a full this of our teams both within BUCS leagues and outside: https://bit.ly/3aEy2rx

We are always looking to expand the sports we offer at Winchester, and to increase the number of competitive teams. If there is a sport, we currently don’t offer that you would like to set up, please follow this link to propose a team.

ACTIVITIES PARTICIPATION FUND

Winchester Student Union recognises that some students encounter financial barriers to taking part in our activity groups (sports teams, societies, and representational networks). We believe that participating in our activities is an important part of extra-curricular life at Winchester, enhancing both wellbeing and learning while at university, and that no student should feel like they cannot take part or are at a disadvantage due to financial hardship.

ELITE SPORT PROGRAMME

The Elite Sport Programme (ESP) is a University-led scheme which allows student-athletes to develop and compete in their sport while studying for a degree. We understand the motivations of the student-athlete and provide support to allow an individual to reach their full potential as an athlete while gaining a fantastic education. The ESP provides student-athletes with expert coaching, sport science support and academic support within an elite sport environment. The ESP is student centred to create a professional environment for individuals to excel. Eligible student-athletes have access to our strength and conditioning laboratory and coaches, access to our sport therapy clinic, frequent physiological performance testing, regular one-to-one support with academic staff, access to sport-specific facility and university gym, and lifestyle improvement workshops. Our exceptional programme ensures that all student-athletes receive high-level coaching and performance programming from a sport-specific Head Coach.
