Student Officer, Jet Gates

Student Officers have no pre-defined portfolio, but together with the rest of the elected executive committee, will discuss and propose areas of work for the Union, ensuring that all students are represented. Alongside representing student views generally, Student Officer's chosen areas of work will be defined via their manifesto promises.

You can contact student officers to give voice to feedback about any area of your student experience, to ask questions about any area of the Union's work or to provide information that you feel will allow the Union to provide for student need.

More about Jet:

What did/do you study?

I study Digital Media Design which is designing apps, websites, branding etc!

What SU run events and activities have you been a part of?

My focus has primarily been on the behind the scenes work: student experience collaborators, one winchester and other consulting opportunities. You may see me at some surprise BOP's throughout the year as well so keep your eyes peeled...

What are your top Manifesto points?

  • Shuttle bus between campuses because that hill is a nightmare for everyone, but especially for disabled people
  • Bring back previous inclusivity campaigns such as accessibility in sport as well as creating new campaigns for cultural holidays, accessibility and awareness days
  • Create a program of life skills which would include cooking skills, budgeting lessons and tours of the city

What made you run in the Elections to become an officer?

For the last two years of my time at Winch, I have been able to get involved right at the heart of decision making, which has allowed me to see all of my hard work pay off. This has been so rewarding and I wanted to continue to make important changes within our community, hence me running for student officer!

What’s your favourite thing about Winchester?

The nature! I love the city so much, you get all of the perks of being in a city without it feeling like a city. Everywhere you go there's dogs, ducks, squirrels and cats! Everywhere is so green and its perfect for anyone needing an escape from all of the uni chaos.

What has been your proudest moment during your student journey (so far)?

By far my proudest moment was setting up Access (disabled students network) and watching it flourish over my time in second year. We had worked so hard at making it the most accepting place we could, and watching everyone at the end of the year sat chatting and playing games together was beautiful. We had seen so many people come out of their shells and become completely different over the last year and that makes me so so proud.

What do you like doing when you aren’t being a Winchester SU Officer?

My attachment on my wheelchair means that I have the wonderful ability to go up on the south downs hills at 15mph: racing through the muddy puddles, the wind rushing through me with the adrenaline rush from heaven and an immaculate drum and bass playlist blasting through my headphones. I will often be found up on the hills, before swinging by Cupp to pick up my daily bubble tea fix. I have been known to bring a bubble tea to every meeting, no matter how formal (even the award shows!). This is my perfect way to unwind as I am a very busy person, working multiple jobs across multiple timezones, so self care is very important to me.

What's your favourite film?

Okay so it depends on the mood I'm in. My comfort film has to be the Aristocats, the illustration and artwork is just stunning! But my all time favourite has to be Hamilton. I know the entire soundtrack off by heart and listen to it daily (sometimes up to 3 or 4 times back to back!). Its the perfect beat to sync my workflow to.
